Shadow Boy

I remember when Mickey was maybe eight months old and he discovered his shadow. He had been lying down on the futon on the floor, practicing crawling, when he noticed it on the wall. He was so surprised! What an expression!

He hadn't paid much attention to it until today. He's 19 months old now. Eek! My, how time flies!!! Anyway, we were at the tennis court again. He sat down to look at some fallen leaves, and then suddenly got up and ran crying over to me. I asked him if he'd seen a bug. I couldn't imagine what else might have scared him over there (though he's never been afraid of a bug before). I had only been about four feet away and didn't see anything strange. But then he pointed at his shadow, and acted like he was either trying to get it off of him, or to get it to go away, or maybe both. I told him I couldn't, that it was his shadow and it was stuck to him. He signed "please." Ohhhh, how cute! But still, no, I couldn't remove it.

He tired to be satisfied with that and move on, but it still bugged him. He'd stop from time to time to try to get rid of it, or ask me to help him rid himself of it. He was also concerned when I pointed out that I had one too, but then he went back to worryig about his own shadow.

Eventually he got over it and focused on other things. But, boy! He sure is a far cry from Peter Pan and his shadow!
